after high terrain follows the beach if we get lucky....
leaving Latacunga, where you can see a competitors MD11 with engine troubles being repaired (the mechanics have to carry up all tools and replacement parts working on a wind-shaken platform!), we usually fly out to bogota and if we are lucky we get a nice layover at the beach in Puerto Rico/Aguadilla to warm up again after the mountainous and usually cold stay in Quito.
that's a total contrast in colour, humidity and lifestyle. the sea north of Puerto Rico is very deep, the Puerto Rico Trench reaches a depth of 9200m and is 800 km long. its an area of constant light rumblings and underwater quakes and landslides. fortunatly on the beach you don't feel much of all that, except that the watertemperature is a bit colder than in cuba or dominican republic.

Talking about the Equator....
leads to another set of pictures...
while staying in Quito where we have our crew-hotel when landing at Latacunga in Ecuador, we visited the Equator-museeum and a vulcanic crater nearby.
while some of the effects are intresting, like there is never a hurricane on the equator due to missing coriolis-force and you need a double sided sun-clock, cause the sun is half the year south and half the year north, other experiments are more entertainment for the tourists without engeneering degrees...
fun fact:
Latacunga (LTX/SELT) is the highest altitude airport we are flying to, it's in the andees at an altitude of 9207 ft or 2806m. as far as i know this is also the highest elevation airport flown with the 747. problem here is that the cotopaxi vulcano is neighboring with a height of 19347 ft or 9207 m and Boeing certifies the 747 (400 or -8 equally) for use of flaps only below 20.000 ft which basically means that we have to dive into the valley with speeds exceeding 250 kt indicated which due to the high altitude and the thin air equals about 300 kt or 550 km/h ground speed before we can decelerate inside the valley. This and the close space for manouvering inside the valley makes for special simulator training and a captains only landing....
the landing on that day was with a weight of 217 t (about 40 t freight and 15 t fuel remaining) and an approachspeed vref+5 of 140 kt indicated, which corrlated to 170 kt true airspeed(thin air) and 163 kt groundspeed due to 7kt headwind.
it looks like this: (left NAV screen is radar, the right one is terrain display :-)
and here Quito and surroundings:

on a different note: i was also in quito when they lost their final game of the soccer worldcup, so this is the crowd at the Plaza Foch, Quito during an important game:
as i mentioned, at the end they were a little sad...

A walk through Campinas/Brazil
Today i'll take you out on a short walk in Campinas/Brazil - you can see people waiting in line for a copy machine, nurses in the park resting from their job, the old and closed Eden bar, a typical street restaurant and people training in the park on free fitness machines. fortunatly its on the other side of the equator and getting warmer now, with the sun reaching into summer...
as with the whole industry also campinas has seen slightly better times and life here seems to be on freeze with a lot less happening than 10 years ago.
we provide transport of dangerous goods to campinas, mainly seatbelt and airbag charges, paint and electronics for the car industry, while taking back mainly flowers and fruits.

the flying fridge...
fun fact: since the foot heaters and airconditioning on the 747-8 were really bad at the beginning and the feet area was pretty cold on longer cruising flights, the company gave us this stylisch thermo-boots to cope with the cold.
fortunatly this days are getting to an end after two years and the newly delivered aircrafts offer propper heating and ventilation which will be retrofitted into the earlier delivered dash8's.
this is how that looked like:

inspired by my dear friend and excellent fotographer
C. Van Heijst (http://www.pbase.com/flying_dutchman),
i tried myself shooting the mood of flying at night for several hours. the image is out of the 747-8F over Mongolia on the way from Europe to China/Beijing. still not completely satisfied with the sharpness of the stars, room for further improovment...

I am visiting 30+ countries regularly while on my job as a Freighter Pilot,
therefore i have more than enough opportunities to take pictures and share with you on this blog.
the target is an update twice per week, due to my irregular work schedule interruptons are possible.
have fun!

first are three pictures shot in Nairobi/Kenia during September 2014 while sitting on a bar overlooking the road from the airport to the city. all three are shot within 1m radius and are just showing the difference in view and feeling with differnt zoom settings:
